About HumanTutor

At HumanTutor, we believe humans learn best from experienced humans. Teaching involves human connection, communication, and nuance that AI chatbots cannot replicate. HumanTutor aims to preserve and honor the art.

We also know finding a qualified tutor (and filling out a tutoring schedule) can be difficult. We intend to bridge this gap, connecting families seeking support with qualified experts.

How It Works

How do I get a tutor?
Browse the tutors in the Find a Tutor section and click Request This Tutor on the profile that fits your student. A short form collects your contact information, the subject needed, and your preferred library and time. HumanTutor reviews the request and coordinates the first session.
How does the first session work?
After your request is received, HumanTutor confirms the match with the tutor and schedules the first session at a nearby public library. You pay the first session fee to HumanTutor. After that first session, all further sessions are arranged and paid directly between you and the tutor.
Who are the tutors?
Every HumanTutor is an active Massachusetts teacher. Employment is verified before any tutor is listed on the site. These are not freelancers, college students, or side hires — they are classroom professionals.
Where do sessions take place?
All first sessions take place in a public library convenient to both the tutor and the student. This is a non-negotiable platform standard for student safety and accessibility. Subsequent sessions are arranged between the tutor and family directly according to their preferences.
How does payment work?
The first session fee is paid to HumanTutor as a one-time coordination fee. Payment information is shared prior to confirmation. Payment is completed 24 hours before the session. Sessions cancelled more than 24 hours before the session face no penalty. Every session after the first is paid directly from the family to the tutor — HumanTutor takes nothing from subsequent sessions. Tutors set their own hourly rates.
Can a student under 18 sign up independently?
No. Students under 18 must be represented by a parent or legal guardian for all inquiries and coordination. The parent or guardian is the point of contact. College students and students 18 or older may represent themselves.
What if the first session doesn't work out?
A dispute may be submitted to HumanTutor within 24 hours of the scheduled session. Each dispute is reviewed manually. If upheld, the first session fee is refunded in full.
I don't see a tutor in my town — what now?
HumanTutor is actively growing its network of Massachusetts teachers. Reach out at luke@humantutor.help with your town and the subject you need, and HumanTutor will either help match you or let you know when a tutor in your area joins.
